Second Part: Strategy Implementation

July 7, 8:30 AM to 6 PM

1.- Course Description.

The focus of this module is the identification and understanding of some of the business issues(i.e., inhibitors & facilitators) that effect strategy implementation. These issues include: Corporate governance, corporate structure & design, entrepreneurship & innovation, organizational learning & knowledge transfer and competitiveness and global leadership. Each of these tools will be explored as to their content and effect on strategy implementation.

2.- Course Objectives

Each student should be able to:
  1. Analyze the situation facing a firm.
  2. Apply analytical techniques from finance, accounting, organizational theory, organizational behavior, marketing, economics, operations and related business disciplines.
  3. Recognize problems the organization faces and develop and evaluate alternatives courses of action available to firm to solve those problems.
  4. Persuability communicate their analytical conclusions, both verbally and in writing.
  5. View the corporation as a whole and appreciate the responsibilities / Obligations of top management.

Professor’s background

Robert D. Nixon, Ph.D., teaches corporate entrepreneurship, strategic management and project management and serves as Associate Dean of Masters Programs in the College of Business. His research interests include strategic management and organizational restructuring; entrepreneurship and small business management; and technology, innovation and project management.

Nixon has extensive experience in large international high-technology firms and as a founder or manager of a number of entrepreneurial firms. He has consulted and conducted project and strategic management training for companies in the aluminum, engineering and construction, finance, public utilities, institutional housing, material handling and aircraft service industries. He currently serves on the board of directors of the publicly-traded Genlyte Group.

Nixon's research has been presented at annual meetings of the Academy of Management, International Council for Small Business, Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, Marketing Science Institute and Project Management Institute. He has co-edited five recent books in John Wiley & Sons’ “Strategic Management Series,” and his research has been published in the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, International Journal of Entrepreneurship Education, Strategic Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Engineering & Technology Management, Organizational Dynamics and Marketing Science Institute.

Nixon was on the strategic management faculty at the A.B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University, before joining U of L. He earned his engineering degree from Brigham Young University and his doctorate in strategic management from Texas A&M University.
